About Us
Preserving Our Past, Inspiring the Future
We are a community united by a shared love of old mills and a passion for preserving Ireland’s rich industrial milling heritage.
For centuries, mills were vital to Ireland’s communities, providing employment, supporting local economies and harnessing the power of wind, water and human ingenuity. More than just buildings and machinery, they are an important part of our history, landscape and cultural identity. Today, many are neglected or at risk of disappearing, taking with them irreplaceable evidence of our industrial past.
As a nonprofit organisation and registered charity, we seek to promote greater understanding and appreciation of this heritage, encourage the preservation of mills and their machinery, and help ensure their stories survive for future generations.
Our society brings together enthusiasts from all walks of life: mill owners, restorers, historians, engineers, academics, as well as those who simply love visiting mills and seeing tangible examples of a bygone era in action. Through the sharing of knowledge, experience and ideas, we encourage cooperation between practical conservation, historical research and academic study. Our international links connect us with like-minded individuals and organisations who share our commitment to milling heritage across borders.
Our work depends entirely on the dedication of volunteers and the generosity of our members and supporters. Funded solely through membership subscriptions and donations, we are not in a position to provide financial assistance or restoration grants. Instead, we contribute by raising awareness, sharing knowledge and bringing people together in support of a common cause.
Every mill has a story worth telling and a heritage worth protecting. Together, we can help ensure that Ireland’s industrial mills are not forgotten, but valued, understood and appreciated by future generations.

Archive Material Requests
M.SO.I. collects large amounts of mill related historical information.
Our archivist spends many hours on these requests and therefore the society has decided to charge €50 for information supplied to non-members.
